Chapter Twenty

Chapter Twenty

Nolan’s heart leaped into his throat. What the unholy fuck?

This wasn’t his first run-in with Project Icarus test subjects gone wrong. Between the feral monsters on Diomedra and the zombie-like, brain-dead patients on Corrigan, he thought he’d seen the super-freaks at their worst.

He’d been wrong.

The things emerging from within the cryostasis chambers had the right number of arms and legs to be human, but they bore little resemblance to anything Nolan would have considered alive, rational men or women.

Their bodies were misshapen and twisted by oversized muscles, spinal growths, even bones jutting out from their joints. Some had overlong fingers and toes that looked like animal claws, while others had body parts turned black and necrotic. All were covered from head to toe in protuberances of various colors, shapes, and sizes—pustules weeping yellow fluid, dark, mole-like growths sprouting hairs, brown clumps, cracked and dripping crimson rashes, or simply gaping holes that might once have been pores.

Nolan was so stunned and horrified by the sight that he forgot to raise his rifle. He could do nothing but stare at the abominations crawling, dropping, or lurching out of the cryostasis chambers all around him.

“I don’t know how you defeated my nanite swarm, but that won’t save you.” Doctor Archer’s smug voice echoed from the loudspeakers, eliciting a chorus of growls, moans, and gurgling hisses from the mutated freaks. “I doubt it’s much comfort, but your bosses will pay dearly for sending you to your death.” His voice turned harsh. “Though I doubt you’ll care much once my rejects tear you apart.”

That snapped Nolan out of his momentary shock. The shrilling alarm, the bulkhead at his back, and the mutated freaks all around him were concerning enough, but at that moment, he had a burning desire to drive a fist into the doctor’s face just to shut him up.

Nolan brought the Balefire Mark 2.1 up to sight on the nearest super-freak and squeezed the trigger, sending a triplet into the thing’s lumpy, misshapen skull. Bone, brain, and what might have been a tumor exploded out the back of the monstrosity’s head, and it collapsed into a spineless heap.

“Taia, give me options!” Nolan shouted as he took aim at the next human-shaped thing. “Tell me you can reverse the lockdown and shut the alarm off!”

“Working on it!” she said. “The options part, that is. The moment that alarm sounded, the machine shop went on lockdown, no signals in or out. I’ve been cut off from everything outside this room, so I can’t send the signal to shut it down. However, my systems linked to the rest of Warbeast Team and Djinn One should be finding a solution.”

Nolan took down two mutants with a single burst of bolts—one with an overgrown leg had lurched off-balance in front of another, presenting an easy target. Yet even as Nolan swiveled to sight on the next target, he knew this wasn’t a battle he could shoot his way through. Not against what looked like forty or fifty of Doctor Archer’s “rejects.
